KEVIN McKay of Sutherland has won the $3000 first prize in this year's Sydney, City of Villages, an annual art prize organised by the City of Sydney.

McKay's winning painting Observations Millers Point depicts a bird's-eye view of historical terraces against the bustling harbour, and is among 10 works reproduced as giant posters exhibited in the Pine Street Creative Arts Centre and at various JCDecaux street advertising sites throughout the city.

McKay lives in Sutherland with his wife and two young children, and is studying for his Masters in Painting at the National Art School.

"It's great to have my work validated like this, and the money is a huge help,'' McKay said.

"I am particularly thrilled that my work is being displayed on the street and will be seen by many who would never go to a gallery.''

The work was on display at the Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, Chippendale, until August 3.
